App-enabled pregnancy test aims to digitally hold your hand through (and after) the process
Taking a pregnancy test is one of the most nerve-wracking things a woman may have to go through in her life – regardless of whether or not pregnancy is intentional.
To help virtually hold women’s hands through the process, First Response has unveiled a Bluetooth, app-enabled version of its pregnancy test that can guide women from before they take the test to what to do after they receive the results.
“We know that today, connected health is a growing trend but we see this as an opportunity beyond that yes or no result. They get the answer and throw the test away and they have many questions on what to do next,” First Response’s Wendy Bishop tells me.
“This helps guide them through the test process, and once they receive the result they get a whole host of different types of information based on what the result was.”
To start, download the companion app and input data like your last period, age, and whether you are trying to get pregnant. This information helps the app dictate the content you receive at the end of your pregnancy test, such as “Congratulations” on positive result for a woman who wanted to get pregnant, or a more neutral wording for one who did not want to be.
Once you’re ready to take the test, the app explains exactly what to do and has a counter to keep track of the time it takes for the result to process. While you wait, it lets you choose to be kept calm (tutorials on breathing exercises), kept distracted (BuzzFeed animal videos will play), or learn more about potential results.
After the result is ready, the app can provide information on what to do next or what to ask your doctor depending on your goals. You can also lock the app with a code, so no one else sees your results before you get a chance to look.
I asked First Response about the nature of the “advice” given to women via the app. Most of the content seems geared toward helping women who want to be pregnant, such as help with tracking ovulation and vitamin recommendations.
If you wished to not be pregnant and received a positive result, First Response remains politically neutral and recommends seeking a doctor’s professional advice for the next steps.
First Response said it developed the product in partnership with Qualcomm, using research data of women between the ages of 18 to 39 in the United States. The company found that 63 percent of women increased their smartphone usage after becoming pregnant, and that roughly 80 percent of those who access First Response’s website do so via mobile.
Starting at $14.99, the ‘smart’ pregnancy test is about double the cost of First Response’s traditional test. It won’t replace a doctor’s advice, as it isn’t intended to, but that extra cost might be worth it if you need a little bit of assurance to help you through the first steps of potential motherhood.

Apple is breaking the upgrade cycle this year so next year’s iPhone can be awesome
Here’s a bit of unexpected news: Apple is doing away with the traditional two-year iPhone cycle, according to the Wall Street Journal . In other words, don’t expect anything special from this year’s model. The good news is that 2017’s should be just as awesome as 2016’s will be dull.
The 2016 iPhones will reportedly maintain most of the the same feature set as the current models, and the same 4.7 and 5.5-inch screen sizes. The most notable difference will be the long-rumored removal of a headphone jack which will make the phones thinner (because that’s totally necessary) and “improve water resistance.”
The phone will allegedly ship with a Lightning-to-3.5mm connector, similar to Lenovo’s new Moto Z .
While I’m all for getting rid of the traditional “tic-toc” cycle of phone upgrades (number upgrades one year, ‘s’ models the next), you have to wonder why then release an iPhone this year at all.
Of course, Apple will probably make a load of money from holiday sales anyway, but I’d rather they just commit to the more substantial 2017 phone if they’re going to drop the cycle anyway, to build up the hype and save consumers the upgrade-itis itch.
It’s worth nothing that breaking the upgrade cycle this year makes a lot of symbolic sense; 2017 is the iPhone’s 10-year anniversary, so Apple doesn’t want it to ‘just’ be an iPhone 7S. Instead, it’ll likely be something particularly special – perhaps with that wraparound OLED display .
Smartphone announcements are no longer that exciting nowadays, so I’ll take waiting another year if it means an iPhone that will truly blow my socks off.
Now there’s just one question: What will this year’s iPhone be called? The iPhone 6.5? The iPhone 6s …s ?
Here’s a $9,000 leather smartphone for Bentley owners who’ve gone insane
CES was yet again like a car showroom of the future displaying smart concepts from automakers seeking to ensure they can stay relevant in a post-oil age.
Unfortunately, Bentley clearly didn’t get the memo as it just went live with another “modern smartphone” whose defining features include a leather handset in colors like ‘grape lizard’ and a 3D Bentley logo adorning the product.

Although the third handset in its five-year partnership with gaudy luxury brand Vertu , which came as a Nokia spin-off, has finally dumped the Series 40 OS, it goes live without the latest version of Android.
And the Signature Touch for Bentley , which is handmade in the UK, starts at a frankly insane $9,000, even though it’s restricted to AT&T and T-Mobile, so says The Verge .
And that’s actually a price cut from the more than $20,000 it was asking for its previous, equally hideous Signature for Bentley .

Although its specs are towards the high-end , neither the 1080p display, nor the Snapdragon 810 processor, are the best around. And they’d usually only set you back around $600.
Of course, the handset works with your Bentley and includes a 12-month subscription to a 24-hour concierge, plus exclusive content and event access for its VIP owners.
Of course, that also means you’ll have to pay upwards of $200,000 for the car as well.
If that has ticked all your boxes, you can get your hands on one from January 28 , you tasteless fool.
