Microsoft’s next Surface rumored to be an all-in-one desktop PC
Here’s a rumor that may get Microsoft fans excited: Microsoft’s next Surface device just might be an all-in-one (AIO) desktop PC.
Rather than bring us yet another notebook-type device, Microsoft is said to be working on an iMac competitor for release in Q3 2016. The second generation Surface Book is now said to be delayed until early 2017 to give this machine some breathing room.
The reason we’re not seeing the device on our desks now is Microsoft’s pragmatism. Sources claim the company is waiting for Intel’s Kaby Lake processor — the successor to Skylake — to be ready for production.
The problem with this rumor is the source. DigitTimes has a less-than-stellar reputation as a source of leaked info, so we’re not sold on it. Microsoft has also declined to comment.
Still, it makes a good bit of sense. All-in-one PCs are still very much a thing, even though we focus a lot of energy on notebook devices. An AIO Surface also sits nicely in the lineup between the Surface Book and disgustingly big Hub .
And like the Surface, an AIO from Microsoft may jumpstart the PC hardware market. A lot of attention has been paid to Notebooks the past few years; Dell’s XPS is exhibit one. We’ve now got a good selection of true premium devices on the market, though none quite as unique as Surface.
A Surface AIO is also one that could find more favor in the enterprise space, depending on how Microsoft prices it.
But don’t overlook the developer space. Now that Microsoft is getting serious about Visual Studio and Xamarin, developers (.NET folk and otherwise) would probably like their own version of an iMac, provided it’s a powerhouse.
DigiTimes also reports that the AIO PC market is in decline, with shipments expected to drop to 12.6 million units this year from 14 million units last year.
But Apple is quick to tell us that while notebook PC sales are down, the MacBook is on the rise. Microsoft could do the same for AIOs with the Surface.
LG G7 leak shows off phone in full glory
We already know the LG G7 ThinQ will officially be revealed on May 2, but that isn’t stopping the leaks from flowing. Everyones favorite leaker, Evan Blass , shared an image of the G7 from pretty much every angle.
The image simply confirms much of what we already knew. The phone will have dual cameras – this time oriented vertically – a notch at the top, and a small-ish bezel at the bottom. It looks kind of like the Huawei P20 from the front, minus the fingerprint reader.
It also confirms one of the more recent leaks: the G7 will have a dedicated button for Google Assistant. That’s sure to annoy some of the folks who hate Samsung’s permanent Bixby button, but at least Google Assistant is generally much more useful. Besides, we don’t know yet whether LG will let you customize the button’s function; it might actually be a blessing in disguise.
It’ll be interesting to see how the G7 fares among the Android fanbase; the combination of a notch and chin might not go over so well, especially since the G7 was supposedly delayed for a redesign. Hopefully LG can wow us on the camera or software front. But hey, at least it still has a headphone jack.
I any case, it won’t be long until we find out more – May 2 is but a few weeks away.
I’m more excited about the next rumored Kindle’s case than the device itself
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos recently tweeted that a new Kindle ebook reader was on its way, and the company appears to have mistakenly leaked details on a product page on its Japanese site.
The new device, dubbed the Kindle Oasis, reportedly features a a 300ppi screen and weighs 131g. That makes it about as sharp as the Kindle Voyage from 2014 and a bit lighter than previous models.
But that’s not nearly as impressive as the accompanying case listed on the page. The Verge reports that the genuine leather accessory will allow the Oasis to last for up to 20 months of standby time.
That’s nearly two years. Kindles currently offer about six weeks of battery life, which is quite substantial. But the thought of a battery that lasts about 13 times as long and charges simultaneously with the device when plugged in makes a great case for finally picking up an ebook reader, if you haven’t already.
Amazon has not confirmed if these details are accurate, and pricing wasn’t revealed on the leaked page. But if you’re looking to buy a Kindle in the near future, it might be worth waiting to see what the Oasis really has to offer.
