Amazon reveals new Kindle and Kindle Voyage eReaders
Amazon has today announced that it will be expanding its Kindle range of eReaders with the all-new Kindle Voyage and a new version of its classic basic Kindle.
The Kindle Voyage is Amazon's thinnest ever eReader, measuring just 7.6mm thick. The rear of the device will be made of magnesium and the front will have a glass panel with a micro-etching finish to make it feel more like paper.
It will have a 6in high resolution display with a pixel density of 300ppi (pixels-per-inch). That's twice as many pixels as the current Kindle Paperwhite, so text should look super sharp. By our calculations, this should mean the screen has a resolution of 1,440x1,080 - the same as the Kobo Aura HD .
There's also a new PagePress sensor which will allow you to turn the page without even moving your fingers. All you need to do is apply pressure to the bezel and the page will turn automatically. Amazon calls this "silent haptic response for consistent and immediate feedback". Of course, you can still turn the page with the usual tap or swipe if you prefer.
The Kindle Voyage will have a new adaptive front light as well. This will sense your environment and adjust the screen to the ideal brightness. If you don't like what the Voyager decides is the right brightness, there are manual controls to adjust it to your liking.
It will have 4GB of storage and last up to six weeks, according to Amazon, based on 30 minutes of reading per day with the wireless turned off and the light setting at 10.
The Kindle Voyage is available to pre-order now and will be released on 4th November 2014. The Wi-Fi only version will cost £169 while the 3G version will cost £229.
Meanwhile, the new version of Amazon's basic Kindle will have an all-new touchscreen interface and the same software features as the Kindle Paperwhite, such as FreeTime, Vocabulary Builder, Page Flip and Word Wise. Page turns are also 20 per cent faster thanks to a new 1GHz processor and it will come with twice the amount of storage, offering 4GB over the existing 2GB.
The new Kindle is available for pre-order now and will be released on 2nd October 2014. It will cost £59 for the "special offers" model (which displays special offers on the Kindle lock screen) while the "non-special offers" model will cost £69.
